This just came in from our travelling correspondent, Liz McElhinny: I was in Washington DC early in March for a conference and had the opportunity to explore the National Museum of Women in the Arts.  The museum is in a beautiful historic Renaissance Revival building-a former Masonic Temple.  It has three floors that showcase a permanent collection of works of women artists from the past and present.  The mezzanine has a restaurant that is open for lunch.  It is located in downtown DC. The exhibit that caught my attention was “Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts.  It is a collection of quilts organized byRead More →

Our March guild meeting was all about color. Featured Quilter Helen Thomas was featured as our member quilter this month.  She has been quilting since 1990.  Among the many quilts she had to show us was this colorful sunflower fabric quilt that she hand-pieced and is in the process of hand-quilting.  She’s not sure she’ll finish quilting this. The quilt laying on top of the sunflower quilt is one she made from her winnings at one of the MPS “Strip Poker” game nights.  Helen has also participated in many of the MPS Quilt Show Challenges and had several of those quilts to show us.  SoRead More →

Who are the Winey Quilters?

This MPS small group has been around for awhile but has seen its membership change over the years. Jacque Ervin and Michelle Herrmann are the original charter members of the small group.   As other members left the group or moved away, Jacque and Michelle were joined by Becky Bohlinger, Liz McElhinny, Christie Frey, and finally, Dianne McDonnell.  Because they feel that they have achieved a good cohesiveness, they now consider themselves a “closed” small group. How did they come up with this name for their group?  Well, it seems that at one of their weekend quilting retreats on the Oregon Coast, there were more bottles of wine per capita than actual food items. Read More →

Oh what a night!  We had another action-packed evening together as a guild. Keeping Your Resolution to Reduce (Your Stash) For our evening program, Vickie Rooks and Dawn DeLong presented the joys of scrap quilting.  Vickie shared the stash-organizing techniques that she learned from Joan Ford’s Scrap Therapy.  Joan has two books out:  Cut The Scraps and Scraps Plus One.  She has 7 steps to get your stash organized, and Vickie shared three of them with us:  Get Started  Cut scraps into 5″, 3 1/2″, or 2″ squares Sort your squares any way you wish, ie: by color, value, or style During her presentation, VickieRead More →

This blog post was submitted by Liz: A few weeks ago I made a trip to Vancouver WA with my husband. He is a train guy and I dropped him off at the Wye and went off to explore some quilt shops in the area.  The first shop was A Quilt Forever. It is a family-owned business that Yvette and her mother Sharon run. They have an online store and recently moved the bricks and mortar shop from their home to a retail space. Fabrics run from Civil War traditional to contemporary modern lines. The new space has a classroom and the ladies plan toRead More →
