Submitted by Dianne McDonnell In an effort to keep my mind engaged in something other than boring exercises, I usually listen to podcasts while I’m at the gym.  The Craft Industry Alliance podcast is one among my several subscriptions.  It’s hosted by Abby Glassenberg.  You may know her under her old podcast name, “While She Naps”.  In her podcasts, Abby interviews artists and crafters in several different genres, and many times she will talk with someone involved in the quilting world. A couple of weeks ago, Abby talked to author, Teresa Duryea Wong, who has written several quilt and fabric related books.  The one thatRead More →

Submitted by Naomi Macioce (Naomi is a new member to MPS and the most recent addition to our blogging team.) I recently attended an exhibit entitled “Defining Moments: Stitched Perspectives on Becoming a Woman”, by Carol Larson and Marion Coleman. This exhibit was in the beautiful gallery space of Visions Art Museum of Contemporary Quilts and Textiles, in San Diego, CA, from July 20 –October 6, 2019. In this exhibit two close friends, tall women, and textile artists present quilts in tandem, representing many unique social, cultural, and personal factors that impacted their lives such as: family life, school years, transition into womanhood, and intimateRead More →

Submitted by Liz M. Happy Fall everyone! Greetings to our new MPS guild members and welcome back to our ongoing members. Marcia, our new chair for 2019, invited members to create a personalized name tag to use at our guild meetings and events.  Name tags can be a wonderful conversation starter!   Will your name tag reflect your favorite colors? Your favorite fabric genre? Your love for appliqué or piecing?  What style do you prefer? Lanyard or pin? Favorite shape-square, rectangular, hexies? Do you like a place to display your collection of pins related to sewing and quilting? Below are links to tutorials for nameRead More →

Metropolitan Patchwork Society (MPS) held their bi-annual quilt show on March 16, 2019 at the Beaverton Library.  It coincided with National Quilt Day and the Challenge theme was “Books”.  (You can click on any of the pictures to see a larger image). The one-day show was free and drew about 350 people, mainly from the Farmer’s Market and the Library patrons.  Many attendees had never seen a quilt show and there were lots of positive comments! The quilts were amazing and showed the variety of interests the guild supports: traditional, modern, art, group challenges, comfort quilts and Quilts of Valor. Guild members hung ~75 quiltsRead More →

Back in March of 2011, the American Folk Art Museum presented “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts”.  The show was held for 6 days at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.  On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Joanna S. Rose wanted to showcase her collection of 650 red and white quilts and also wanted the exhibit to be free to the public.  Can you imagine such an exhibition? A video was posted by the American Folk Art Museum, and it features Elizabeth V. Warren, who was the curator of the show.  In a short 9-minute video, she talks aboutRead More →
