Submitted by Dianne McD. Way back in January of 2020, when the world was still normal, our Chair elect Linda, presented a challenge to all of us during our Guild meeting.  Our challenge was to create a quilt that was 20″ x 20″ made from 20 fabrics that were pulled from our stash in 20 minutes.  It sounded like great fun! The grand Reveal of the 2020 Challenge Quilts was set for our Guild meeting on November 24th, 2020. Little did we see then what was barreling down the tracks towards our community. Between January and the end of November, we had experienced a world-wideRead More →

Submitted by Liz M. 2020 is a long year! I wrote in early spring about struggling to be productive in my sewing room during the lockdown. I puttered around with masks, tidying my sewing room, purging my stash and getting organized. One area I worked on was my UFO projects. I have had four tops quilted and they are now bound. One has been gifted, one is a Christmas quilt for our home and two others are waiting to be gifted later this year. I have made a 20 x 20 quilt for the MPS challenge, a VOTE wall hanging, sewed backs for several otherRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD with the help of Rosalie Movius and Sheridan Collins. This month brings the third annual Portland Textile Month. PTM aims to engage the textile community in a month-long festival of events.  The theme for this year’s events is Repair and Reuse. As part of PTM, the Oregon Historical Society will display the Afro-American Heritage Bicentennial Commemorative Quilt.  While Portland was dealing with it’s issues of racism within the city, 15 African-American women from the area came together in 1974 to decide which historical events and success stories to include in the 30-block quilt.  This quilt is owned by the OHS andRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD. You know how, sometimes, when you’re browsing through quilting YouTube videos and you see something that looks like a fantastic idea?  So you watch the whole thing and then implement the idea.  After you’re done, you wonder what you missed that could have clued you to the fact that it’s probably not the greatest idea ever. No one?  Just me? Here’s what happened.  A couple of years ago, I saw a video from Sew Very Easy by Laura Ann Coia.  She had a great idea for making a smooth surface for free-motion quilting on a domestic sewing machine.  She uses snowRead More →
