Back in March of 2011, the American Folk Art Museum presented “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts”.  The show was held for 6 days at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.  On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Joanna S. Rose wanted to showcase her collection of 650 red and white quilts and also wanted the exhibit to be free to the public.  Can you imagine such an exhibition? A video was posted by the American Folk Art Museum, and it features Elizabeth V. Warren, who was the curator of the show.  In a short 9-minute video, she talks aboutRead More →

Our Program Chair has been hard at work putting together four wonderful workshops for us.  The classes are quite diverse.  You can create an art quilt, or go more traditional.  You can do something completely different from anything you’ve done before, or you can make a more contemporary quilt.  There is something for everyone.  In fact, you’ll probably be interested in more than one workshop. You can click on any of the images below to see more detail.  All workshops are open to members and non-members alike. On Wednesday, March 28, Laura Jaszkowski will be bringing us her “Sew Your Garden” workshop.  You have theRead More →

MPS member Deb Messina learned this valuable skill — among others — from her grandfather. “Growing up in my grandfather’s house, I learned how to frame roof rafters, mix concrete, change the oil in a car, and sew — all under his guidance,” recalls Deb. She clearly remembers their first joint sewing project. “We had some deck chairs that needed to be recovered. No such thing as outdoor fabrics in those days. He taught me how to draft the patterns,Read More →

MPS member Jean Kelly, who is also a member of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild, is Queen of the UFOs, a designation she earned at the PMQG’s December meeting last night. How did she earn it and what did she win? Read on. A year ago at this time the PMQG issued a challenge to members to complete their unfinished quilts (UFOs) during 2015. Organized by PMQG member Sam Hunter of Hunter’s Design Studio, the challenge called for members to pay $10 to register the projects they wanted to finish during the year. Participants were to check in with Sam at each monthly meeting. ForRead More →
