When I’m Quilting, I just can’t live without…..

Submitted by Dianne McD. You know how it is when you’ve been quilting or sewing for years, you have your own way of doing things, and then you get this inkling, “I wonder if there is a better way to do this?” Or, “Is there anything new out there in the quilting world that I don’t know about?” Well the other day, I was talking to our Program Chair, Rosalie, and she told me that another MPS member, Kathy, had mentioned that she was interested in what other quilters were using these days or what might be their favorite quilting gadgets or notions.  Rosalie andRead More →

Another Worthwhile Project

Submitted by Dianne McD with help from Deb Messina In late 2018, MPS received a grant from an organization that was closing it’s doors.  The purpose of the grant was to fund the making of 271 pillowcases.  These pillowcases are used by Oregon Children’s Protective Services for police officers and social workers who must remove children from their homes in emergency situations.  Without these pillowcases, children are given black garbage bags in which to pack their belongings.  The pillowcases are meant to replace the garbage bags and provide a small bright spot in a traumatic time.  And the children get to keep them.  Deb MessinaRead More →

Submitted by Liz M. During this stay-at-home time, our quilt shows and exhibits have been cancelled or postponed. I have spent time online reading and exploring to find interesting sites and articles. I found the International Quilt Museum site and enjoyed the variety of information available. I have briefly highlighted a few areas below. The International Quilt Museum (IQM) is located on the University of Lincoln campus in Lincoln, Nebraska. The IQM holds the largest collection of publicly owned quilts in the world. The mission is to collect and preserve textiles and quilts from all countries and cultures with a strong focus on education. EXHIBITIONSRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD. What does your “quilting” library look like?  I was looking at mine the other day and wondering if I needed to organize and purge.  My library falls into two categories:  1.  block and/or quilt patterns, and 2. technical instruction books.  Most of the technical books are for hand-dyeing fabric, but there are a few that teach design as well.  The majority of the books in my library are the pattern books. Surprisingly though, with the exception of my very first quilt that I made using Eleanor Burns’ “Quilt in a Day” log-cabin book, I don’t think I’ve made a single quiltRead More →

Missing a Favorite Thing

Submitted by Jacque Ervin. Jacque is a long time member of MPS and a very talented quilter. We asked her to be our guest contributor for this fifth Wednesday of the month. I don’t know about you, but I am missing my trips to the fabric stores. I often would go just to visit without any real intention to buy anything, just to be inspired. I just want to look, to feel, to smell. If I happen to see something (which, let’s face it, would be most of the time) then I would purchase an amount, or maybe start a new project. Shopping in my stash, whileRead More →
