Quilted Journey

My Quilting Journey

Each month, our My Quilting Journey page highlights one MPS member and their unique path in quilting. Through three meaningful quilts and the stories behind them, our featured quilter shares the experiences, inspirations, and growth that have shaped their creative journey. Janet Tranbarger

One of my Earlier Quilts - Sampler

Around 1975 I took a quilt class through Albany Adult Ed in Berkeley, CA. It was quilt-as-you-go with 6 pieced blocks and 6 quilted ones. I decided to just use the quilted blocks eventually and used colored thread for them as I had come from an embroidery background. Never really used.

This quilt measures 42.5″ x 54.5″. It was hand-quilted using coloring book images as patterns.

Another Earlier Quilt - Star Spangled Banner

For years I made feathered stars whenever my guild had a challenge so now I have a collection of almost 25. This quilt had to use the 2 black and white prints at the bottom of the picture and had to have some beads sewn on.

This quilt measures 28.5″ x 28″. Quilted by myself.

A Later Quilt - Bryan in Ireland

While in college and studying in Copenhagen my son, Bryan, took this picture of himself visiting Ireland. I always loved it so decided to try to make it using Ruth’s [McDowell] method of designing and piecing. It was designed in 2012 but not pieced and quilted until a few years afterward.

This quilt measures 48″ x 38″ and was quilted by myself.
