Beyond the welcome appearance of crocuses, daffodils, and daphne, the arrival of spring in the Portland metro area is heralded by a series of quilt shows. The first of these is coming up this weekend (Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19): the 22nd Annual Airing of the Quilts at the Milwaukie Center. Described as a community quilt show, the Airing of the Quilts is not affiliated with a guild. Think of it: 21 independent quilt shops in Oregon banding together to offer a three-week “shop hop” across the western side of the state. Now that’s something to make quilters and fabric lovers smile in anticipation. The Harvest and Stitches Shop Hop runs Oct. 3 – 24, with each participating shop offering visitors a free pattern for a 6″ block plus the fabric to make the block.
