Beyond the welcome appearance of crocuses, daffodils, and daphne, the arrival of spring in the Portland metro area is heralded by a series of quilt shows. The first of these is coming up this weekend (Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19): the 22nd Annual Airing of the Quilts at the Milwaukie Center. Described as a community quilt show, the Airing of the Quilts is not affiliated with a guild. The featured artist is Barbara Neill, whose talk, “Anything Goes,” is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, from 11:00 am to noon. Are you one of those quilters who has resolved to work on UnFinished Objects (aka UFOs) in 2016? If so, MPS has an extra incentive for you. At the monthly meeting Jan. 27, MPS member Becky Swick announced a six-month challenge, beginning now and ending at the July 26 meeting. Members can join the challenge any time by paying $10.00, completing up to six UFOs, and showing the completed projects during the Inspirations (Show and Tell) segment of the monthly meetings. MPS member Jean Kelly, who is also a member of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild, is Queen of the UFOs, a designation she earned at the PMQG’s December meeting last night. Think of it: 21 independent quilt shops in Oregon banding together to offer a three-week “shop hop” across the western side of the state. Now that’s something to make quilters and fabric lovers smile in anticipation. The Harvest and Stitches Shop Hop runs Oct. 3 – 24, with each participating shop offering visitors a free pattern for a 6″ block plus the fabric to make the block.
