Once a month, we will try to showcase a quilt from one of our MPS members. Whether we’ve been quilting for decades or are just beginning our quilting journey, we are a talented bunch; and we inspire each other regularly with the many wonderful quilts that are created. So it seems fitting that we showcase a quilt in hopes it will inspire others. (You can click on any of the images to see a larger view.)
Into the Woods—Winter Cabin
This quilt was first shown at our Ombre Challenge Quilt Reveal in November 2021. But even though it’s been almost four and a half years, this quilt is definitely worthy of another look.
Marcia was inspired to make this quilt by the artwork of P. Buckley Moss, who herself was inspired by the lovely rural countryside of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. You can learn more about P. Buckley Moss and see some of her artwork by clicking here.
Marcia had an ombre fabric that flowed from dark gray to nearly white. Because we were allowed to add one more fabric from our stash, Marcia chose to use a black fabric. The tree in the foreground, the two trees behind it, the creek, and the cabin were fused to the quilt top. Everything else is thread painting, using what Marcia remembers to be a three-ply polyester embroidery thread.
The detail in the thread painting is exquisite. The gray and silver trees and the twiggy branches of the fused trees look so natural. The creek banks and snowy shadows depict the iciness in the scene beautifully. Did you notice the reflection of the trees in the creek? As you can see on the back of the quilt, the quilting is minimal—but just right.
You might be wondering what makes this quilt so special. P. Buckley Moss had a way of pulling the viewer into her painted scenes. Marcia’s beautiful ombre fabric and her attention to detail accomplish the same thing. So, while the artists’ mediums are completely different, they both draw you in to spend time in the quiet calmness of a wintry landscape.
Marcia’s quilt is not an exact replica of a P. Buckley Moss painting. But through her inspiration from those paintings, Marcia was able to recreate the same sense of enjoyment viewers experience when lingering with an artist’s work.
