It’s been said that when looking for creative sparks of inspiration in our artwork, we should branch out from the medium we use and explore other artists and their artistic mediums.  MPS member Dawn W sent us some information about an exhibit in Portland that just might fit such an exploration. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU is presenting an exhibit called “Weaving Data”.  The exhibit runs from January 24th to April 29th of 2023 and admission to the museum is free.  This exhibit explores the relationship between computing and weaving.  Did you know that the Jacquard weaving process used a form ofRead More →

Reconnecting with a Quilting Master: Ruth B. McDowell

Submitted by Naomi Macioce Several years ago, I was introduced to Ruth McDowell’s work when I had the good fortune to attend an exhibit of some of the prized pieces of the Del Thomas quilt collection. I was completely entranced by her use of commercial fabric to create fanciful and vibrant quilts portraying the luscious colors and curves of flowers, and landscapes, along with portraits of many delightful farm animals with unique personalities. She uses a collage like approach, combining the type of fabrics that you would have in your, “I don’t know what I could ever do with this” stash, and colors that youRead More →

Fifteen years ago, a group of women decided to form a quilt guild on the west side of the Portland Metro area. Terry Grant was part of that group who became the Founding Mothers of Metropolitan Patchwork Society (MPS). She is a graphic artist by training and created the original enamel pin many of our members wear. In the past, Terry has spoken to the guild a couple of times and been the featured quilter at an MPS Quilt Show. She is no longer an active MPS member but continues to explore and create art in her local studio. Her art quilts are made withRead More →

Our Program Chair has been hard at work putting together four wonderful workshops for us.  The classes are quite diverse.  You can create an art quilt, or go more traditional.  You can do something completely different from anything you’ve done before, or you can make a more contemporary quilt.  There is something for everyone.  In fact, you’ll probably be interested in more than one workshop. You can click on any of the images below to see more detail.  All workshops are open to members and non-members alike. On Wednesday, March 28, Laura Jaszkowski will be bringing us her “Sew Your Garden” workshop.  You have theRead More →

As you may or may not have heard, Nancy Zieman passed away this last Tuesday morning from cancer.  Her show, “Sewing with Nancy,” was the longest running sewing show on television.  She also founded “Nancy’s Notions” which started as a small business in her home over thirty years ago.  I think many of us can find at least one notion in our sewing supplies that came from her company. Back in May, Abby Glassenberg, host of the “While She Naps” podcast interviewed Nancy.  During the interview, Abby and Nancy talked about the beginning days of her notions business and how her television show came toRead More →
