Submitted by Liz M. 2020 is a long year! I wrote in early spring about struggling to be productive in my sewing room during the lockdown. I puttered around with masks, tidying my sewing room, purging my stash and getting organized. One area I worked on was my UFO projects. I have had four tops quilted and they are now bound. One has been gifted, one is a Christmas quilt for our home and two others are waiting to be gifted later this year. I have made a 20 x 20 quilt for the MPS challenge, a VOTE wall hanging, sewed backs for several otherRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD. Every year in May, our Guild presents “Quilt College” for our monthly meeting.  However in 2020, we were thrown a curve ball by the world pandemic and had to cancel our meetings beginning in March.  During the next three months, the MPS Board held monthly virtual meetings to plan how the Guild could continue to meet monthly and what programs would work the best under these new circumstances.  We’ve come along way since March and the Guild has been meeting virtually beginning in June. I’m also happy to report that we were able to hold our annual Quilt College at ourRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD. What does your “quilting” library look like?  I was looking at mine the other day and wondering if I needed to organize and purge.  My library falls into two categories:  1.  block and/or quilt patterns, and 2. technical instruction books.  Most of the technical books are for hand-dyeing fabric, but there are a few that teach design as well.  The majority of the books in my library are the pattern books. Surprisingly though, with the exception of my very first quilt that I made using Eleanor Burns’ “Quilt in a Day” log-cabin book, I don’t think I’ve made a single quiltRead More →

Reconnecting with a Quilting Master: Ruth B. McDowell

Submitted by Naomi Macioce Several years ago, I was introduced to Ruth McDowell’s work when I had the good fortune to attend an exhibit of some of the prized pieces of the Del Thomas quilt collection. I was completely entranced by her use of commercial fabric to create fanciful and vibrant quilts portraying the luscious colors and curves of flowers, and landscapes, along with portraits of many delightful farm animals with unique personalities. She uses a collage like approach, combining the type of fabrics that you would have in your, “I don’t know what I could ever do with this” stash, and colors that youRead More →

Submitted by Naomi Macioce (click images for larger view) How does one collect a million scraps…let me count the ways? First, you sign up for your first quilt class, which somehow continues into multiple quilt classes, UFO sessions, workshops, joining a guild, going to yard sales, and shop hops, etc!!! Especially when there are those free “give-a-way tables, or $3.00 for a bag promotions. Needless to say, in my almost 5 years of living in San Diego, I had collected one very large garbage bag of scraps. When it was time for me to move to Portland, I decided to bequeath this treasure to myRead More →
