Submitted by Dianne McD. Several weeks ago, Naomi M sent me this video clip from the PBS Newshour.  It’s all about Faith Ringgold and her amazing 60 years of creating art.  She is featured in a major exhibit at the New Museum in New York; and in this clip, she is being interviewed by Jeffrey Brown while surrounded by her story quilts.  While we only get short glimpses of the quilts, one can tell that they are amazing.  And Ms. Ringgold is delightful to listen to.  You can watch the 7-minute clip by clicking on the button below. Thanks, Naomi, for sharing yet another exampleRead More →

Submitted by Dianne McD. In February, member Neena K sent me an article about the Gee’s Bend quilters.  Then about a month later, Linda G sent me a link to a video about the Gee’s Bend quilters.  It seems the quilters are back in the news and are finally reaping the benefits of their notoriety.  The video is a news clip from WPBS, a PBS station that serves northern New York.  The article comes from “The Verge” which is an American technology website that is operated by VOX Media. You can watch the video and read the article by clicking on the buttons below.  IRead More →

Submitted by Liz M. Christie F created a beautiful hand sewn Cathedral Window (CW) quilt for our 2021 MPS Ombré Challenge. It hangs above her mantel with a lovely curated group of art and books. Traditionally, this pattern is sewn by hand and involves layers of fabric folded and sewn to reveal another fabric. This method usually does not include batting because all raw edges are enclosed. It is a wonderful handwork project and takes time to complete a whole quilt. After the challenge, Christie discovered a technique for making Cathedral Window blocks by machine from 2.5” charm squares. This technique was described in aRead More →

Submitted by Liz M. Do you use a certain fabric or group of fabrics to create your quilts? Or, do you use your scraps to begin your work? Do you select the pattern or the fabrics first? Every quilter does things their own way. I am working to use some of my stash this year. As I was tidying my fabrics, I came across a yard of an Alison Glass print that I purchased because I loved it. Did I have a quilt in mind when I bought it? No, but it was blue and different than most fabrics I had. I paired it withRead More →

This article was sent to me late last year by Linda G.  It is an interesting story of the ingenuity of some of the women who were interred in prison camps in Singapore during World War II.  And another story of quilts serving a utilitarian purpose–just not the one we usually think of.  Click on the button below to read the article.  (You can click on the image to the left to see a larger view) There is also a short, 3-minute video on YouTube narrated by a woman who was interred in the Changi prison as a young girl.  She is standing in frontRead More →
