Reconnecting with a Quilting Master: Ruth B. McDowell

Submitted by Naomi Macioce Several years ago, I was introduced to Ruth McDowell’s work when I had the good fortune to attend an exhibit of some of the prized pieces of the Del Thomas quilt collection. I was completely entranced by her use of commercial fabric to create fanciful and vibrant quilts portraying the luscious colors and curves of flowers, and landscapes, along with portraits of many delightful farm animals with unique personalities. She uses a collage like approach, combining the type of fabrics that you would have in your, “I don’t know what I could ever do with this” stash, and colors that youRead More →

Staying Home

Submitted by Liz M. I have been staying home since March 13 due to Covid-19. I had great plans for how to use my time and listed out projects to complete. I made some progress each day but did not spend hours quilting as I had originally intended. Rather, I have spent time reading, enjoying my favorite blogs, sewing a bit, walking outside daily, FaceTiming with family and watching the news. I admit to feeling guilty that I was not being more productive. One of the blogs I follow shared an article that helped me put those feelings into perspective. It’s from the blog, “WitRead More →

Making Do

Submitted by Dianne McD. We’re still on the road.  Today completes our 7th week.  With all that is going on, we’ve basically planted ourselves and our RV in an Arizona desert on BLM land to “shelter-in-place”.  There aren’t many other RV’s here and we’re spaced quite a distance apart.  We’re safe and only go to town for supplies when we absolutely need them. But being on BLM land also means that we’re dry camping.  We are not hooked up to water, electricity, or sewer.  Seasoned RVers call it “boon-docking”.  Our trailer is self-contained, so boon-docking is not a problem for us; we just watch ourRead More →

Submitted by Naomi Macioce (click images for larger view) How does one collect a million scraps…let me count the ways? First, you sign up for your first quilt class, which somehow continues into multiple quilt classes, UFO sessions, workshops, joining a guild, going to yard sales, and shop hops, etc!!! Especially when there are those free “give-a-way tables, or $3.00 for a bag promotions. Needless to say, in my almost 5 years of living in San Diego, I had collected one very large garbage bag of scraps. When it was time for me to move to Portland, I decided to bequeath this treasure to myRead More →

Another Far Away Quilt Shop

Submitted by Liz M. Last week, Dianne wrote about the shops she has visited during her time on the road. My husband and I traveled to Maui for two weeks in February and I had also planned a post on quilt shops for this week. I agree with her that it is so fun to explore new places and enjoy the personality of each shop! As we planned the trip to Maui, my husband asked if there were any quilt shops on the island. A quick internet search turned up three shops. One each in Lahaina, Kihei and Kahului. I was able to visit theRead More →
