Back in March of 2011, the American Folk Art Museum presented “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts”.  The show was held for 6 days at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.  On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Joanna S. Rose wanted to showcase her collection of 650 red and white quilts and also wanted the exhibit to be free to the public.  Can you imagine such an exhibition? A video was posted by the American Folk Art Museum, and it features Elizabeth V. Warren, who was the curator of the show.  In a short 9-minute video, she talks aboutRead More →

Yes, it’s that time of year again.  There are Gift Guides and Wish Lists everywhere.  Your Social Media Committee thought it would be fun to create a list just for MPS. So we put our heads together and came up with a few things we’d thought you’d enjoy.  Use this as your own personal wish list or gift guide.  Remember, you can always click on an image to get a larger view. First of all, what quilter doesn’t need (or just want) more equipment or gadgets? A quilter for the past sixteen years and member of MPS for five years, Miki can often be found enjoying a handwork project with a Diet Pepsi on ice while watching a good murder mystery on TV! Her favorite part of belonging to the guild is spending time with people who enjoy fabric as much as she does. Join us as we get to know Miki! When you’re not quilting, how do you spend your time? With my 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and my Great Dane Henry. Who taught you to quilt? My two aunts got 13 family members together to teach us to quiltRead More →

The current Website Committee decided to change our name to better describe what we do.  So we are now officially the MPS Social Media Committee. We have a Facebook account and an Instagram account.  Just use “metropatchquilts” in the Search box for both accounts and you’ll see some of our latest postings.  You can choose to follow us and then you’ll never miss a thing. So who is this Social Media Committee?  Well, I’m glad you asked! Hopefully, you’ve noticed more activity on our MPS Blog.  That’s due to two new writers who are excited to bring you quilting information. Barbara S. is a fairlyRead More →

Flowers + quilts = the perfect spring pairing! Quilters have long featured flowers in their quilts, such as the time-honored appliqued Baltimore Album and the English paper-pieced Grandmother’s Flower Garden.  Today, it’s hard not to include flowers in our quilting when the options include a wide variety of techniques as well as stunning floral fabrics and fun quilting motifs. Take note of how a couple of our guild members have highlighted flowers in their quilts: Candy F. created the original “In Full Bloom” which is pieced, appliqued, and painted. She used the border fabric as her inspiration. This simple patchwork is made extra special withRead More →
