“Quiet Time” Discovered a big packet of fat quarters of Sentimental Journey (SSI) that I had forgotten I owned. Fabric probably from 1990’s. Still like the soft colors. Cut 2 x 10 1/2 inch strips to make chevrons. Enjoyed the partial seaming which I think gives depth to the quilt. Because I had so many fat quarters, I picked them for the backing.

The hand embroidery was completed during 2025 baseball season. I enjoy a hand project while watching games. I had never embroidered on velveteen, but it worked well. The front and backing are velveteen- soft, warm, weighted drape. An unusual Christmas quilt for me.

“Dream Weaver” Made as a 45th wedding anniversary gift for my husband, Charlie — the only quilt I’ve ever made for him! It’s actually a bed runner, essentially made by cutting the Ribbon Box quilt design in half lengthwise. This is the fourth version of Ribbon Box I’ve made (but probably not the last). Quilted by Karlee Sandell

“Emoji Hearts” I really love this emoji heart quilt in talk bubbles and had to make it! Keeping it for myself. Started February 2025; completed May 2026.

“Every Which Way” This was a class at Sisters given by Sheila Frampton Cooper. It was all improvised, moving from one piece to another, taking inspiration from that piece to connect to another.

“Enough” This was a class at Sisters given by the Sew Kind of Wonderful sisters. After one block, I knew that I would never make this into a full size quilt. I changed it to a wall hanging and I so happy I did. I modified the pattern to use up the scraps into the middle row. Quilted by Maria Taylor.

“Bride of Frankenstein” These were leftover blocks from two of Karla Alexandra’s classes at Sisters. Since I was only learning a technique, there was no quilt in mind. I couldn’t let them go to waste so I cobbled them together to form a wall hanging. I used every scrap to make the back.

Collaboration Deb Brookens, Christie Frey, and Retreat Attendees

Fall 2025 Virtual Retreat Charity Quilt. Blocks made by MPS Fall Retreat attendees. Pieced by Deborah Brookens. FMQ by Christie Frey. This was a collaboration with MPS members and will be donated for charity. Another quilt top yet to be quilted was also made of blocks by attendees and pieced by Deb.

“Glad Plaid” I started this quilt without a recipient in mind but when I learned the my friend Cathy was going to be a grandmother again and it was a boy I knew where it was going. It was somewhat complex to put together making sure everything was placed correctly. Quilting was with a walking foot for narrow rows and in the squares I used my embroidery module to stitch out the design.
