I follow Frances Arnold’s blog at Frances Quilts; and a few weeks ago, she found a YouTube video demonstrating how our sewing machines work. I found it very interesting. Mostly because when I sit down to my machine, I expect it to work like sewing machines have worked all my life. I never think about WHAT makes it work.
This 19-minute video shows a little history of sewing, how sewing machines came to be, and the remarkable breakthroughs that make our machines what they are today. After watching this video, I appreciate my machine even more and plan to treat it with a much more respect.

Wonderful history and explanation of the development and workings of the machine. The machines are indeed hard working! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Dianne. This was very intriguing and I learned more about the ways a sewing machine came to be. I have new eyes for the great tool that it is! Susan
Sewing machines have always been a part of my life, so I was fascinated by their history. My Mom was a “stay at home mom” when I was young, taking on jobs sewing slip covers, drapes, and occasionally clothing for the “rich ladies” in our town. I’m sure I frequently fell asleep to the hum of the machine well into the night. Thanks for sharing this!
