Once a month, we will try to showcase a quilt from one of our MPS members. Whether we’ve been quilting for decades or are just beginning our quilting journey, we are a talented bunch; and we inspire each other regularly with the many wonderful quilts that are created. So it seems fitting that we showcase a quilt in hopes it will inspire others. (You can click on any of the images to see a larger view.)
Pink Pumpkin Patch
Show of hands—how many of you, upon opening a package filled with pink, peach, and green fabrics, would immediately think, “Aha! I’ll make a Pink Pumpkin Patch quilt!”
No one?
Well, that’s exactly what MPS member Vickie said to herself when her Show and Tell Inspirations drawing winnings arrived in her mailbox back in September 2024. While most of us might have gone straight for florals or spring themes, Vickie saw pumpkins—and not just any pumpkins—pink pumpkins!
Inspired by the Pink Pumpkin pattern from Poppie Cotton, she decided to up the ante and give herself six creative “rules” to guide her design. And let’s be honest—nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a good self-imposed challenge! Here were her six:
- Use the fabric she won in the drawing
- Make pumpkin blocks in different sizes
- Include words in the design
- Add a ghost
- Make the background stand out
- Create a unique border
Sounds like a tall order, right? But what came out of those guidelines is pure quilting magic.
Vickie’s pumpkins range from a dainty 6 inches all the way up to a show-stopping 24 inches, all set against a dramatic black-and-gray checkerboard background that makes everything pop. And just when you think you’ve taken it all in, you spot the adorable ghost and a cheeky “BOO” that make you smile. The pink-and-peach flange peeking out from the binding is the perfect final flourish—because every quilt deserves a little extra flair.
When it came time for quilting, Vickie handed it off to Nancy Stovall of Just Quilting, who stitched in a delightful spider-web design that ties everything together beautifully.
The result? A quilt that’s equal parts charming, whimsical, and wonderfully unexpected—a perfect Halloween quilt with a refreshingly pink twist.
Congratulations, Vickie, for thinking outside the (pumpkin) patch and proving that color and creativity know no season!
So now we have to ask—do you ever give yourself creative parameters when designing a quilt? Tell us in the comments below! We’d love to hear how a few rules have helped you break through creative boundaries.

Thank you! This was a fun quilt to make!
How clever is this. Amazing use of pink. Brilliant
Thank you! It is fun to “play” with fabrics from the guild!
Vickie is an inspiration to the entire guild for using fabrics on hand. And indeed who thinks of a pink pumpkin patch! It’s fun to see winning Inspiration bundles turned into creative quilts and then shared with others. Great work!
Thank you! I appreciate all the support you share at the monthly Inspirations meeting!
