Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts Taken straight from the book, “Simple Shapes, Spectacular Quilts” by Kaffe Fassett, MPS is offering a workshop on January 31, 2015.  The workshop topic will be Bordered Diamond quilts, and the instructor is our own member, Betsy Sayre.  She has taken a bordered diamond class from Mr. Fassett himself and loves, Loves, LOVES the pattern.  In fact, she’s already made nine (yup, 9!) bordered diamond quilts.  That makes her something of an expert. What excites Betsy about this quilt pattern is the way she can make each center diamond sing and dance just by using the correct fabric for her framing.Read More →

Star Spangled Cabins   That’s right—it’s finished and ready to travel!  This patriotic quilt features Civil War reproduction fabrics in a log cabin design, and is 90” x 90” in size.  It was designed by our own guild member, Becky Swick, and was constructed by herself and many members of the Metropolitan Patchwork Society.  The only thing missing for this masterpiece is the explanation of how it came to be.  So a quick call was made to Becky last week and the following is the story of Star Spangled Cabins: Becky has always designed her own quilts because 1.) she wants her own “take” on herRead More →

One night, a couple of months ago, my husband and I were watching the evening news.  About halfway through the program, a feature was presented about medical evacuations of soldiers from Afghanistan to military hospitals in Europe.  I don’t really remember the gist of the whole story; but they did interview a soldier who was injured and getting ready to be evacuated.  He was injured enough that he needed to be evacuated, but he was able to stand and walk. As the story progressed, the cameraman focused on injured soldiers being loaded onto a transport plane.  The injured, covered with the usual drab green blankets,Read More →

Candy’s 1st Round Robin What a great name for a small group!  When asked how they arrived at that, they said that the group came up with a list of figures of speech, played around with them, and landed on this one.  (Great job, ladies–this “figure of speech” aptly describes your small group!) Individually and together as a group, they have produced many stunning traditional quilts and “edgy” art quilts. Becky’s Round Robin The Quilters on the Edge consist of Becky Bohlinger, Jacque Ervin, Claudia Evers, Candy Fullaway, Jean Kelly, Judy Liebo, Lisa Roberts, and Jan Shipman.  (Do you remember Becky and Jacque being included inRead More →

This just came in from our travelling correspondent, Liz McElhinny: I was in Washington DC early in March for a conference and had the opportunity to explore the National Museum of Women in the Arts.  The museum is in a beautiful historic Renaissance Revival building-a former Masonic Temple.  It has three floors that showcase a permanent collection of works of women artists from the past and present.  The mezzanine has a restaurant that is open for lunch.  It is located in downtown DC. The exhibit that caught my attention was “Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts.  It is a collection of quilts organized byRead More →
