Many young girls (and a few boys) who grew up to be quiltmakers learned how to sew at the knee of their mother or grandmother. MPS member Deb Messina learned this valuable skill — among others — from her grandfather. “Growing up in my grandfather’s house, I learned how to frame roof rafters, mix concrete, change the oil in a car, and sew — all under his guidance,” recalls Deb. She clearly remembers their first joint sewing project. “We had some deck chairs that needed to be recovered. No such thing as outdoor fabrics in those days. He taught me how to draft the patterns,Read More →

MPS will be featuring its annual Quilt College this coming Tuesday, May 24th, at 6:30 PM.  Our quilting professors are all lined up, and they have chosen their subject matter for the mini-courses.  The rest of us will be divided into four learning groups, and over the course of the evening, we will be given the opportunity to attend each class. This year, our teaching staff includes Judy Liebo, Marcia Sanderman, Bette King, and Carolyn Bahrman. They are a talented group of quilters, and the class participants can expect to gain knowledge and great inspiration from these courses. Of course, that’s not all the evening hasRead More →

Sidnee is an artist who uses fabric and fiber as her medium, and who, in 2007, developed her own unique method of applique to make quilts.  Using her photographs, computer processing software, fabric and free-motion sewing, she creates beautiful art quilts.  While her earlier art quilts were more traditional and abstract in design, she considers her current work to be more representational of what she sees in her photos. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and art shows around the country as well as internationally.  Some of her quilts are part of individual private collections.   She was featured in an episode of Oregon Art Beat, which is aRead More →

When you see the MPS Organizational Philosophy, you’ll find the first sentence reads: The founding board envisioned a guild that would provide members with opportunities for friendship, fellowship, education and sharing in an atmosphere of cooperation and teamwork. Community Service was not mentioned there because the founding mothers did not want it to be the main focus of the guild. But as I’ve been getting to know our MPS members, I’m finding that many, many of them are involved in some area of service. Lots of charity quilts are being produced from within our ranks! Some are “Quilts of Valor” for our state and national veterans, others are infantRead More →

Vicky Would Be Pleased

Fabric, books, thread. Quilts tops, quilt blocks, finished quilts. Gift certificates, quilt hoops, handmade items. Even a serger! The items to bid on, artfully arranged by organizer Mim Gray and her helpers, were many and varied at the guild’s annual potluck and silent auction, held last week during the March meeting. MPS members and guests responded with enthusiasm, and bidding was spirited on several items. Proceeds from the auction netted over $1200, all of which goes into the guild’s Vicky Arnold Memorial Program Fund, known as VAMPF. Vicky Arnold would certainly be pleased. Vicky was a charter member of the guild who was serving as Treasurer of MPS when she died unexpectedly in July 2003 following a brief illness. She was only 47. MPSRead More →
